History

US 1 is part of the Federal Highway System, in place since the 1920s. Most of present-day US 1 was part of former New England Route 1, with the portion north of Houlton being part of New England Route 24.

Since then, there have been a large number of alignment changes and reroutings, listed here in something close to chronological order:

• 1930s: Waldoboro bypass opened.
• 1931: Waldo-Hancock Bridge opened, replacing a ferry service.
• 1940s: US 1 rerouted between Mars Hill and Presque Isle, eliminating former route through Easton. Current route was formerly US 1A, former route is now part of US 1A and Route 10.
• 1943: Martins Point Bridge between Portland and Falmouth opened.
• early 1950s: new alignment opened between Falmouth and Yarmouth. The old routing is now Route 88.
• 1954: the old Vaughan Bridge between South Portland and Portland was replaced by the Veterans Memorial Bridge.
• 1960s: Damariscotta-Newcastle bypass opened.
• 1962: freeway opened in Brunswick between Pleasant street and Cooks Corner.
• 1963: Belfast bypass opened.
• 1963: US 1 rerouted between Stockton Springs and Ellsworth. Current route was (and still is) part of Route 3 and for a time US 1A; old route is now US 1A.
• 1965: Stockton Springs bypass opened, including new intersection with US 1A.
• 1967: Brunswick freeway extended eastward to Bath.
• 2000: Sagadahoc Bridge (Bath-Woolwich) opened, replacing the old Carleton Bridge.
• 2006: Penobscot Narrows Bridge opens between Prospect and Verona Island, replacing the old Waldo-Hancock Bridge.
• 2007: US 1 rerouted along I-295 through Portland between exits 4 and 9, replacing a confusing maze of city streets.

Future Plans

As the main route through a large portion of Maine, US 1's role as a transportation link is constantly being evaluated. In the Mid-Coast region and through the corridor between Brunswick and Prospect, a long-term strategic planning program, Gateway 1, is currently underway with Route 1 as its centerpiece. And in northern Maine, a new highway between Presque Isle and Caribou is under development, with further plans for an upgrade south to I-95 in Houlton.
