History
Originally, US 1A in Aroostook County
followed present-day US 1 between Mars Hill and
Presque Isle, while US 1 took present-day 1A to Easton, crossing over to
Presque Isle on Route 10. US 1 assumed its
current routing in 1940, and the current US 1A was born. For many years,
US 1A ended in Caribou by following its current routing to Fort
Fairfield and present-day Route 161 to Caribou.
1A's current routing came into being in 1989 when it took over the route
of decommissioned Route 165 from Fort Fairfield to Van Buren.
