U.S. Route 1 By-Pass
History The Sarah Mildred Long Bridge (formerly the Maine-New Hampshire Bridge until 1987) and approaches opened in 1940. The By-Pass 1 name appeared sometime in the 1950s, and was a temporary routing of I-95 prior to the construction of the Piscataqua River Bridge in 1973. Guide US 1 By-Pass is, as the name suggests, a bypass route for US 1 in the Kittery-Portsmouth area. It is mostly access-controlled and crosses a drawbridge from Maine into New Hampshire.
