History
Route 3 formerly extended westward from Augusta to Portland, through
multiplexes with US 202 and
Route 26. This routing was removed in the 1940s. The route from
Augusta to Bar Harbor has seen little to no change, except for
US 1 being rerouted onto one section in the
1960s.
The Augusta Bypass, a two-lane controlled-access road between I-95 on the west side and US 202 east of the city, built to alleviate congestion in downtown Augusta, opened to traffic in 2004 and immediately became part of Route 3.
