History

Route 6 is a relatively late addition to the Maine highway system, the number dating from the 1940s. West of Milo, the number 6 was simply overlaid on the numbers of existing roads, creating a series of multiplexes. Route 6 supplanted Route 155 between Milo and Lagrange; Route 11 between Lagrange and Enfield; and Route 16 from Lincoln east to the border. All three of those routes were rerouted elsewhere in the area.
