History

Route 11's number is descended from the 1920s New England Interstate Route 11, which followed the current route from the New Hampshire border to Sanford and current Route 111 to Biddeford. After that system fell into disuse, 11 was rerouted on a circuitous route across the state.

With the exception of the route between Milo and Millinocket which was constructed in the 19x0s, Route 11 has changed little since.
