History

Route 16 dates from the early days of the Maine state route system, although there have been several changes. Between Eustis and New Portland, 16 followed a road along the south side of Flagstaff Lake until the 1940s, this road is no longer maintained in places (and in fact, doesn't appear at all on recent DeLorme atlases).

East of Milo, Route 16 followed a now-unnumbered route to Howland, the present-day Route 155 and former Route 188 to Lincoln, and the present-day Route 6 to the Canadian border until a rerouting occurred in the 1950s.
