History

Route 77 was commissioned in 1939.

Until the late 1990s, Route 77 crossed into Portland using the Million Dollar Bridge, an antiquated WWI-era span whose replacement was considered as early as the 1950s. After decades of delays, the new Casco Bay Bridge opened in 1998.

Route 77 follows a one-way "couplet" in Portland, with State Street going southbound only and High Street northbound only.
