History

Route 102 in Maine has had a long and convoluted history. As originally designated in 1925, it ran from Augusta to Belfast along present-day Route 3. It was extended eastward through Bucksport and Ellsworth to Seal Cove (part of the town of Tremont) on Mount Desert Island in 1931, then shortened to only include the MDI portion in 1935 as the remainder became part of Route 3.

In 1951, Route 102 was extended northward from Seal Cove to create a loop, ending at Somes Pond in the town of Mount Desert, a routing that remained until roughly 2006.

The loop has recently been cut in half, however. MDOT's GIS file now shows Route 102 ending at the Route 102A junction in Tremont.
