History

Prior to the creation of the U.S. federal highway system in 1926, US 201 was New England Interstate Route 20. US 201 was commissioned as the only mainline U.S. Route entirely within the state of Maine.

There have been two main changes to 201's routing. In the 1930s, US 201 briefly veered east from its straight-line Brunswick-Augusta routing to serve downtown Bowdoinham (with a US 201A following the current route); this route is now Route 138.

In 1954, 201's routing north of Skowhegan to Solon was also straightened out. The former route through Norridgewock and Madison, which was redundant with sections of US 2, Route 8 and Route 16, became US 201A; while 201 assumed the route of the now-defunct Route 147.
