History

US 202 has followed the same general routing since its inception in 1934, but numerous upgrades have taken place over the years, including the Carl Broggi Highway which was built over an old railroad grade in Lebanon around 1950.

202's late addition to the U.S. federal route system (which had  caused it to be routed in Maine over several existing state routes, all of which kept their existing numbers. Until the opening of the Hampden-Bangor high-speed connector in the 1960s, the route of US 202 in Maine was 100% redundant with other state routes, particularly 4, 9, and 11.
