History

Route 3 is one of the least changed of the original 1920s highway routings in New Brunswick. The only major re-routing was between Moores Mills and Dufferin, where the road was switched and upgraded from the east side of Dennis Stream to the west side in the 1950s. Until that point, Route 3 also piggybacked on Route 1 from there into St. Stephen. Most of the former Route 3 is now part of Route 750.

Guide

Route 3 begins at Longs Creek, which has little population but is a major intersection with the Trans-Canada Highway. The road goes south through rolling hills and the farm communities of Newmarket and Smithfield. The route joins Route 640 at Acton, passing through some forest around Harvey Mountain and descends to the village of Harvey, a small incorporated community of 300 people and service centre for the surrounding farming and cottage area. Continuing southwest, Route 3 ascends and descends several more hills, passing more farms, to the community of York Mills. Route 3 crosses the Magaguadavic River and makes a 90-degree turn at the intersection with Route 4.

The highway continues south towards Charlotte County, through mainly uninhabited forest land and the small rural community of Brockway. Lawrence Station, which was a major railway junction, is now a highway junction, with Route 127 leaving for the resort town of St. Andrews. Route 3 turns west through more forest to Andersonville, where it meets Route 630, then south towards St. Stephen through more rural communities such as Moores Mills. At the outskirts of St. Stephen, the road meets the St. Stephen Drive (soon to be part of Route 1), then passes the high school before ending at Route 1 near the Ganong chocolate factory and the local mall.
