History

Route 8 has had the same general routing since the 1930s, and earlier than that between Fredericton and the Miramichi. The section between the Miramichi and Bathurst was Route 11A during the very early days of the highway numbering system. Sometime in the 1940s the section between Taymouth and Nashwaak Bridge was switched from following the west bank of the Nashwaak River to the east bank. And there it stayed for 40 years.

The location of the southern terminus in Fredericton has changed a few times: in the days of the old Carleton Street Bridge, it was at the bridge's south end downtown; but with the opening of the Westmoreland Street Bridge in 1982 it was switched to the north end of the Princess Margaret Bridge in Barkers Point. When the Barkers Point bypass was completed in 1989, Route 8 was taken off its former routing along city streets in Marysville, Devon and Barkers Point to the new Barkers Point and Marysville bypasses, which still connect to the north end of the Princess Margaret Bridge.

A number of upgrades and bypasses were completed during the 1980s and early 1990s: the Marysville bypass in 1982, the Renous-Millerton area in 1988 (with an interchange added at Route 108 in Renous in 2003), Barkers Point in 1989, the Allardville-Bathurst corridor in 1990, and the Oldfield area north of Douglastown in 1992. All are two lanes and controlled access.

In 2001, Route 8 was extended southward by 10 km in the Fredericton area when the new TCH opened. Route 8 assumed the alignment of the former Route 2 Fredericton bypass between the Princess Margaret Bridge and Hanwell Road, and a new connector road for 3 km from Hanwell Road to the TCH itself.

The first phase long-awaited Miramichi bypass opened in late 2006 with the opening of a new interchange at Route 425 at the north end of the Anderson Bridge and a two-lane segment from there to a roundabout at Beaverbrook Boulevard (Route 430) in Newcastle. The DOT has acquired land for a complete bypass of Newcastle and Douglastown.

Future Plans

The next major project for Route 8 is the 36-kilometre Nashwaak bypass, which will extend from Marysville to South Portage. Currently, Route 8 drivers have to negotiate a sharp 90-degree turn, descend a steep hill and go through a heritage residential area, before bearing another sharp right onto Canada Street at a traffic light. After being bogged down in funding delays for several years, and one major scaling-back which met with widespread opposition from Marysville and Nashwaak Valley residents, construction will start in 2007.
