History
Route 11 has existed since the early days of the highway numbering system. Most of the changes to the route have consisted of replacing uncontrolled roads with bypasses or other controlled-access highways. Route 134 almost entirely consists of former sections of Route 11.
The first bypass was in Chatham, where the Centennial Bridge and associated Chatham Bypass opened in 1967 replacing a ferry crossing.
The next section to be bypassed was from Moncton to Shediac. The Shediac Four-Lane Highway opened in 1971 and became part of Route 15, shortening Route 11' s length. A third bypass, in Bathurst, opened in 1972. Freeway sections from Shediac to Bouctouche opened in 1974 and from Dalhousie to Campbellton in 1976. These were extended through the 1980s until they were fully complete from Shediac to Kouchibouguac by 1988 and from Salmon Beach (east of Bathurst) to Tide Head by 1992.
A bypass of Tracadie-Sheila later opened in 2003.
Guide
Future Plans
Future plans for Route 11 include an extension of the Tracadie Bypass to Pokemouche. A 2003 study recommended a twinning of the highway between Shediac and Bouctouche, as well as a Caraquet bypass. Neither of these are currently being acted on.
