History
Route 16 has been in the system, with the same general routing, since the 1920s. The major changes to the route have been a Port Elgin bypass and construction of a traffic circle in the 1960s, the realignment of the highway in Aulac in 1992, and the construction of the approaches to the Confederation Bridge and interchange with Route 955 in 1997.
Guide
Route 16 is part of the "secondary" route of the Trans-Canada Highway serving Prince Edward Island. It connects the mainline TCH (Route 2) with the Confederation Bridge. The road is two lanes and undivided, with access control around built-up areas in Aulac and Port Elgin and the approaches to the bridge.
