History

The 102 number was introduced in 1965 when Route 2 was rerouted to follow the Trans-Canada Highway from Fredericton to Sussex. Virtually all of 102's present routing was part of Route 2 at some point or another. 102's northern terminus was originally in Oromocto, but was extended into Fredericton with the completion of the Route 7 Vanier Highway in 1976. At this point, Route 102 was extended through the city along the former Route 12 to the TCH at Garden Creek.

In 1986, 102 was extended southward by 1.3 km to meet with a new Route 7 bypass in Westfield.

Route 102 was extended further upriver from Fredericton in 2000 with the opening of the first phase of the four-lane Trans-Canada to Longs Creek; and further still in 2006 when another TCH segment opened to Pokiok.
