History
Virtually the entire present-day routing
of Route 106 was formerly part of Route 2. When a
bypass route opened between River Glade and Sackville in the late 1950s,
the former Route 2 through Moncton and Memramcook became known as Route
2A. This was later renumbered Route 6 in 1965 and Route 106 in 1984.
Route 106 was extended west from River Glade to Petitcodiac in 1997 when
another freeway section of Route 2 opened.
There have been two previous Route 106's
in New Brunswick. The first one lasted between 1965 and 1969 along the
west bank of the Saint John River between Hartland and Perth-Andover.
When the Trans-Canada Highway (Route 2) was completed through the area
with the opening of the Florenceville Bridge, the section north of
Florenceville became part of Route 2, and the section to the south
became part of Route 103.
The second Route 106 existed briefly
between 1978 and 1984 in the Oromocto area. After completion of the
Route 7 Geary bypass, the former Broad Road
stretch of the highway became Route 106. When the 106 designation was
moved to the Moncton area, Route 660 (itself now
defunct) was extended north along the road to Oromocto.
