History
The road connecting downtown Grand Falls with the U.S. border was originally designated Route 18. The current number was put into place in 1984.
In 2004, with the opening of an upgraded Trans-Canada Highway through Grand Falls, Route 218 was rerouted off Main Street and away from downtown to end at a new TCH interchange.
