History

Route 3 has existed since the early days of the Nova Scotia highway system, with few changes to its general routing until the 1970s. After the construction of a large number of bypasses along the South Shore, the non-bypassed sections of Route 3 became part of 103, making 3 officially a broken route.

Route 3A

Route 3A provided a shortcut route between Mahone Bay and Bridgewater, bypassing the Lunenburg area prior to the opening of Highway 103. It became Route 325 in the early 1980s.
