History

Route 4 has existed since the early days of the Nova Scotia route numbering system, but it has been shortened, extended and broken up several times; mostly due to the construction of Highway 104. The original route extended from Amherst to Glace Bay (using present-day Route 204 and Route 368 between Amherst and Streets Ridge), but was cut back significantly (to New Glasgow) in 1970 with the redesignation of the Trans-Canada Highway as Highway 104. East of New Glasgow, it was broken up in several places as 104 assumed the routings of all non-bypassed sections of Route 4, except for one through Port Hawkesbury.

Most of Route 4's western routing was put back into place between 1997 and 2000 as new divided sections of the 104 were built between Oxford and New Glasgow. Route 4 now begins at Thomson Station, near Oxford.
