History

Route 22 originally extended past Louisbourg to Gabarus, another 30 km down the coast. When a large area west of Louisbourg became federal property as part of the Fortress of Louisbourg historic site in the 1940s, the road was no longer improved and Route 22 was shortened. A small portion of the former 22 in the Gabarus area is now part of Route 327.
