History

Future Plans

Twinning continues on Highway 101 towards the Annapolis Valley. The current phase, consisting of the segments between exits 4 and 5 and between exit 7 and 8; is under construction and is expected to be completed by 2010. Exit 8A, currently an at-grade intersection, will be replaced with an interchange. Residents of the Annapolis Valley have long demanded the twinning of the entire route due to the large accident rate.

A bypass is proposed for the last non-controlled access segment, between Digby and Weymouth. An environmental impact assessment is currently underway.

Guide

Highway 101 connects Halifax with Yarmouth and the Annapolis Valley region. The road begins at Highway 102 in the Halifax suburb of Bedford (contrary to some maps and a certain free encyclopedia, the nearby Bedford Bypass is secret Route 33, and not part of the 101). The 101 is currently twinned from Bedford past the suburban communities of Sackville and Mount Uniacke, to an interchange with Route 1 in St. Croix. Past St. Croix; 101 is a two-lane freeway which has been known for its share of traffic accidents.

The town of Windsor, 50 km northwest of Bedford, is the main town of Hants County and is known as the Birthplace of Hockey (although that statement is disputed by Kingston, Ontario). Highway 101 crosses the Avon River on a causeway at Windsor, and then bypasses the small seaport of Hantsport.

At the village of Avonport, Route 1 joins Route 101 to cross a four-lane bridge over the Gaspereau River. On the opposite side of the river is Grand Pre, one of the first European settlements in Nova Scotia. It was settled by Acadians in 1680 until they were expelled (mainly to northern New Brunswick and Louisiana) in 1755. The village was later immortalized in Henry Longfellow's poem Evangeline, and the site is now a tourist attraction. Past Grand Pre is Wolfville, home to Acadia University.

The area between Wolfville and Digby is known as the Annapolis Valley, an area known for its apple orchards and other fruit and vegetable farms.

Kentville, 10 km past Wolfville is the largest town in the Annapolis Valley. The nearby town of New Minas is the valley's major retail area.

Past Kentville is a string of small agricultural towns: Cambridge, Berwick, Aylesford and Kingston. The exit into Kingston also serves the military town of Greenwood, home of Atlantic Canada's largest air force base. Another agricultural service town, Middleton, is further to the west. Lawrencetown is home to the College of Geographic Sciences.

Highway 101 crosses the Annapolis River at Bridgetown and skirts along the side of South Mountain, passing Annapolis Royal well to the south. The highway meets Route 1 again at Deep Brook and crosses the Bear River together. Past a small bypass of Smiths Cove and an interchange with Route 303 into Digby, the controlled-access highway ends for several kilometres.

Highway 101 is the main street through several small communities along St. Mary's Bay. A new highway is proposed, but is not expected to be complete for several years.

At Weymouth, the freeway begins again, bypassing the mainly Acadian municipality of Clare. Route 101 turns south to end at the town of Yarmouth.
