History

Future Plans

As the main Trans-Canada route through most of the province, 104 is constantly being upgraded. There are three major projects in the planning or construction stages for Highway 104. The first is a twinning of the highway past the New Glasgow area to exit 27 at Sutherlands River, with the current intersections marked as exits 27 and 27A replaced with an interchange. This project is expected to be completed by 2010.

A bypass of Antigonish, where 104 currently slows down to 3 traffic signals, is also in the planning stages. Surveying and land acquisition are currently underway, and construction is expected to begin in 2008 at the earliest.

A Port Hawkesbury bypass, proposed as early as the 1970s, is now once again in the planning stages. Depending on funding allowances, the project will begin in 2009.

Guide

Most of Highway 104 is the mainline of the Trans-Canada Highway through mainland Nova Scotia. It is divided between the New Brunswick border and the New Glasgow area. The Cobequid Pass toll highway, constructed in 1997, is located between Oxford and Truro.

At the end of the Canso Causeway to Cape Breton Island, the TCH continues as Highway 105 beyond the Port Hastings rotary, while 104 "disappears" for a few kilometres in the Port Hawkesbury area. A bypass is in the proposal stages, but travellers wishing to continue on 104 must currently take Route 4 through the centre of town. On the east side of Port Hawkesbury, 104 begins again as a two-lane controlled-access highway through Richmond County, but currently ends at Route 4 in River Tillard near St. Peters.
