History
Until 1970, Highway 105 was known as Route 5.

Highway 105 is the Trans-Canada Highway route through Cape Breton, generally following the north and west shores of Bras d'Or Lake. Highlights of the route include the Baddeck bypass, the ascent and descent of Kellys Mountain and the majestic Seal Island Bridge.
The placement of the route in the Kellys Mountain area was a political compromise between two nearby communities, Ross Ferry and Big Bras d'Or, when it was announced both would lose their ferry service over Great Bras d'Or in the 1950s in favour of a new bridge as part of the Trans-Canada Highway project. They chose a site between the two locations, which unfortunately meant a tough, and very dangerous, circular route around the mountain.
