@ JL
When you see the weeks…did you notice the different colors from week to week….the colors idicate the soubleheader network
Also 2 maps for one network implied the doubleheader network.
One map for a network implies a single game.
@ Greg
FOX has the doubleheader this week. The Falcons are on the road on the DH network, which is FOX this week. In this case, CBS in Atlanta can’t show a 1:00 game. Therefore, they are showing the Jets-Broncos game.
@Greg…
Atlanta could BUT
The local CBS affiliate would lose money since 95% of those who would watch a game would watch Atlanta @ philadelphia game on FOX at 1pm.
Since CBS has only one game they opted to take the later game because they figure they would get more viewers====higher ratings====more advertisers bidding for local slots===more revenue for the local station====more profit===happy company stockholders.
They make more money running infomercials opposite a football game than a football games ad money brings in.
The would only competete with the hometeams road game if:
1. they had to because CBS had doubleheader
2. They had a game they felt would get really good ratings…like a battle of undefeated or one losee teams….or the later game not in direct competition with the home town team was cruddy like a battle of 2 3-8 teams.
@Matt1463
Not true…
CBS cant show a game in direct competition to Atlanta when its an Atlanta home game.
They choose not to run their only game in direct competition to Atlanta because they believe their would be a lack of viewers.
Had CBS had the doubleheader weekend…..There would be a game running against the Falcons roac game on CBS. The rules only limt games when the home team plays at home.
your hometeam on the road…you get 3 games….in this case the DH is on FOx so you get 2….
the CBS affiliate is fre to choose which game it wants to air. Since they are playing Philadelphia (se Vick) they choose not to compete with it. The 4pm Jets @ Denver is a good game to air.
Had this been later in the year it Baltimore @New England was say a battle of 2 9-2 teams and the Jets-Broncos were 2 5-6 teams….they likely wouldve aired the Ravens @ Pats.
The Nantz-Simms duo is #2 this week with Gumbel-Dierdorf being the #1 commentators with.
@ShinerBock
I think that had the 49ers record been better, the Raiders-49ers game would have been shown instead in AZ. I think Oregon and WA states would have also seen the Bay area game, the other AFC west at NFC west game. I totally agree that Dallas, along with the Sherman TX and Fort Smith, Arkansas stations are wrong to not televise the KC-Houston game. If Dallas and the others do not want the Texans game, they should be getting the Dolphins-Packers game instead. An all AFC matchup (Ravens-Patriots) in an NFC city is wrong.
@Andy
I think SE Kansas is getting the Rams game because they are secondary markets of St. Louis. For OK, DJP has said that it is because of Sam Bradford.
@ DJP
I agree that Nashville should get the Chiefs-Texans game as they are division rivals. The rest of TN should be getting that game as well. Indiana should be getting this game as well because of the division rival.
Nothing against the Nantz-Simms duo, but why is the Ravens-Patriots game being shown in the Las Vegas area? The same goes for the little area of South Carolina getting the CLE-PIT game. I must be drawing a blank on which star college players played there. I know boundaries have to be drawn somewhere but, friends of mine in Kentucky are stuck with the Pats game and would have preferred the KC-Hou or CLE-PIT.
I can see CBS switching games in many other areas as well. What a mess.
I cant figue out why Florence/Myrtle Beach wants Cleveland-Pittsburgh…maybe Rothesburger’s return. Is there a local star kid playing in that game..I cant figure it out. Clemson or South Carolina is not physically located in this TV market. The college kids followed are first round picks and high profile positions like RB, QB, WR, and significant defense players.
Though if Colt McCoy starts for Cleveland as reported look for Austin to flip to that game.
SE Knsas is not secondary for St Louis..they arent secondary for KC either. Oklahoma is picking up the St Louis game because of Bradford.
I live in the Seattle are…they are opting for the Jets-Broncos because it looks competative. They seahawks are on the road early they could carry an early game but likely wont. They could flip to the Raiders-49ers as could Portland and Eugene.
Dallas refused to carry Houston games unless they have to or involve NFC rivals. If they have an option to switch to a different game they would.
The map actually makes sense…
Baltimore-New England is the national game unless there are local games.
KC-Houston..logical georgrahic area.
same true for cleveland-pittsburgh and miami-graan bay.
San Diego @ St Louis is being picked up in SoCal, Arizona (st louis is a division rival) , oklahoma (bradford), and st louis.
Jets @broncos is the late token game for FOX home team markets and a few road opponents.
Oakland @ San Fran is picked up in the traditional San Fran and Oakland markets.
besides being the filler the Jets @ Denver is picked up in New York area and Denver area with the Pacific NW picking up the game (the NW markets could opt out for an early game…though Seatle may stick with the late game).
Nashville should be taking KC @ Houston because they play both teans. Knoxville is sticking to that game because of Tennesee connection.
[...] The Rams are on CBS for the first time this year and if you are in St. Louis, Oklahoma City, San Diego or Arizona you will be getting the game. Because of KC’s success and the Rams being on CBS, the Sam Bradford corridor is broken up this week. Check out the map. [...]
Andy, I don’t know what you’re looking at but KOAM is airing the Chiefs game. The rest of Oklahoma is getting the Rams. It’s KFJX that always gets stuck with the Rams unless they’re 3-10 or the Chiefs are home against an NFC team. KOAM always airs the Chiefs.
Naqdop, DJP is right. All of the Joplin/Pittsburg market is outside the 75 mile range of Arrowhead and it’s most definitely out of range of St. Louis, so it’s not secondary for either of them. Only Topeka is a secondary market for the Chiefs.
hello,jst wonderng we get Chargers @ Rams here in AZ?common now,at least give us Dolphins-Packer or even better Ravens-Patriots i thnk is a good match-up,good ratings.jst post if you know thnks.
@Scott and DJP
In my comment, Andy mentioned SE Kansas in his rant. I realized that all of Kansas State is getting the Chiefs-Texans game after I posted. I meant to say SE Missouri.
WCBS in New York emailed me saying that the Jets-Broncos game is the national game or co-national game simply because major NFC cities are getting the Jets game as DJP mentioned.
I appreciate your explanations DJP and they do make sense. Still, the map doesn’t make sense.
The Dallas area and north of it should be getting the Packers game (NFC rival). The Tri-cities area of TN (Johnson City) should also be getting the Titans game as well as Indiana since they are a division rival.
Overall, the geographical areas of games do make sense. I would have Virginia and West VA watch Baltimore-NE and expand the MIA-GB game to more of the SE states. The Ravens-Pats is more like a regional game made up of two northeastern teams. I will admit that their combined records make it a more appealing matchup. New York State areas getting the Pats game, flip a coin for which AFC east team would like to be seen, Jets or Pats.
It still looks funny on the map seeing Las Vegas getting an all eastern game instead of the other games surrounding them.
@bigj7
The Rams are Arizona’s division rival and the Chargers must have a decent following there. That is why you are that game. Although the division rival reason isn’t a consistent rule.
I realize that most of the country is showing a 4:05 Jets-Broncos game, but I usually thought that the SH network would show the majority of the country their feature 1pm game to not go against the DH’s 4:15pm feature game unless the SH’s big game was out west i.e. San Diego or Arizona. Can most of the country legally choose a late singleheader game? Please explain
This is the stupidest thing I have ever seen.
Who the FU*K in NW Arkansas gives a crap about the Ravens vs. the Pats? Why the hell can’t we see the Chiefs? Dammit, pisses me off.
@Chris
Baltimore-New England is the number 1 game that goes to all the country unless its overridden by local interest to another game.
In NW AR questioning of why they arent carrying the Chiefs is fair.
You need to contact your local affiliate and complain.
Though next year when the Arkansas QB is drafted in the first round (assuming NFL plays next season) you will see ALOT of Ryan Mallet’s games he starts.
@DJP -
Steelers LB Lawrence Timmons is from Florence, and his parents still live there.
@Joe
Im sure there was someone…just could figure out who…the list I look at on espn just lists the college..not the home town…I have to click on that. I dont havr time to click on the 100 or so players off of every team.
A starter on the team who is from the area and if he is prominent in the offseason with charities and such would draw the local affiliate to occasionally air his teams games.
Usually the ones that draw the hometown or college town are the star players (QB, RB, WR, signature OL or defensive player), college stars, the first round picks.
Knoxville is carrying the KC-Houston game because Eric Berry played for tennesse last year and was the 5th overal pick and starting safety for KC…and Adrien Foster played for Tennessee in college.
I stil think Austin will switch to the cleveland @ Pittsburgh game because Colt McCoy is supposed to start for clevelenad on Sunday. His hometown is in new mexico..not sure what tv market that is (abq, el paso, Amarillo)
@bayoucat–grt ? I think your rite but seeing as how Min/Dal are 2-6 combined & Favre aint gonna play CBS is gonna roll the dice.If CBS had the DH it would be a no-brainer–NE early,Jets late end of story.Bad sun. out here in LA(no wonder their’s no tm out here)SD @ Rams(dome).Dogfighters I @ df II,& Dal@Min(dome).Makes me just wanna watch Andy Griffith & then the baseball gm,LOL.
Cant believe 9ers-Raiders wont be shown here in LA. Of all the games on the schedule, I thought this one would be on for sure, as there is no chance of blackout and Chargers play at a different time.
Nobody outside of San Diego is ever going to care about the Chargers, theyve been trying to convert other parts of CA to Charger fans for years now… guess what, it hasnt happened and it aint ever gonna happen. all the NFL is doing by picking weak matchups people dont want to see is making less people watch cable for football games!
No Jets/Broncos game on CBS here in SD. I mean the Chargers play @ 10am so there is no conflict. So now the only game is the Cowboys/Vikings….this sucks.
@Nixtam,al…..
San diego secondary market is Los Angeles….secondary markets are things that teams do have some control on.
secondary market must show road games.
@Scott….
CBS only has ONE GAME this week because they dont have the double header.
ONLY One map for a network means just one game.
Since San diego is the road team you only get the San diego game.
Damn it…I hate living in oregon. I always get the seahawks game no matter who they play. I am a big eagles fan, i would love to get that falcons-eagles game but nooooooooo! So than i was hoping i get to watch the Baltimore @ New England game cause it will be a great game but naw we got no early game and later on we get the NY Jets @ Denver game which will be a blow out. Wish they would show Oakland @ San Francisco cause it has alot on the table…Only good game we get here this sunday is Dallas @ Minnesota. 1/3=33% Ugh….Sorry about the renting but damn i be hating this…
Once again San Antonio need’s to switch & see MIA@GB
@NIXTAMAL YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT !!! BUT THE NFL GAVE THE CHARGERS THE RIGHTS TO LOS ANGELES IN 2006 TO SPITE AL DAVIS !!! U CAN LOOK IT UP IT WAS THE LAST THING PAUL TAGLIABUE DID BEFORE HE LEFT HIS POST AS COMISSIONER !!!
@ James
San Antonio will chabe to the cleveland @ pittsburgh game first because of colt McCoy starting.
[...] are the TV maps for your week 6 pleasure: CBS FOX at noon FOX at [...]
Colt McCoy’s hometown is Tuscola, TX, in the Abilene DMA. Only Austin ever switched for Vince Young. Don’t see them or anyone else switching for McCoy, at least not this week.
What is this “Dallas refuses to show the Texans unless they have to” BS? Has any TV station ever blatantly rejected a team like that before?
i pray that one day technology will be so good that we are able to pick which games we want to watch
I live in Harrisburg, PA. It is Steeler country. We do have Eagles fans, and even a few Ravens fans. Looking at this map clears up quite a bit for me. Before those thugs moved to Baltimore, the Steelers were televised in Harrisburg without question. Now we have a few times a year that we get the Ravens instead. The first time it happened was the worst day of my life. I understand that this is done geographically, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. Just because Harrisburg is physically closer to Baltimore, does not mean that we want the Ravens on our TV’s. As far as Harrisburg football fans are concerned, Baltimore might as well be on a different continent. This is a disgrace and must be changed. Majority should rule. This is America after all.
How is Harrisburg Steeler country? It’s closer to Philly. It should be Eagles country.
Why does Northern Virginia always get hosed when it comes to Steelers games??? There are more Steelers fans in Northern Virginia than Ravens fans. No one cares about the Ravens west of Washington, DC! They need to start showing the Steelers games in VA, this is ridiculous!
Roanoke, Va – This is ridiculous. Browns and Steelers? Really? No one cares about that. Show a more competitive game like Ravens @ Pats. C’mon CBS!!
Since a portion of the Harrisburg DMA falls within 75 miles of Baltimore, it has to be designated as a secondary market for the Ravens, regardless of how many Steeler fans there are. The same scenario exists in Erie, PA w/the Bills trumping Mr. Rooney’s franchise. I’m not saying that its right, but that’s the way it is.
As for “Harrisburg being closer to Philly”, often distances mean nothing when it comes to team loyalties. My home state of Texas is Exhibit A. Outside the Houston DMA, its almost all Cowboys regardless of which team is closer. Beaumont, TX, located 85 miles east of H-town is a Texans’ secondary market but the Cowboys have an official team souvenier shop in the local mall.
“No one cares about the Ravens west of Washington, DC!”
Speak for yourself. I live in Alexandria, VA and I very much care about the Ravens. As do plenty of area residents I know.
I must be an idiot or something, but I thought Northern New Jersey would see the Pats game.
Cablevision and Fox are in a bitter disagreement now and have pulled Fox off the air.
Regardless, I thought I’d see the Pats game on CBS. It seems I’ll see no football at 1 PM. Bummer!
Also, I don’t see the map for the early game. All I see is the one above that has New Jersey in blue, but I’m assuming that’s to indicate the Jets game at 4 pm, right?
Well, it appears that Richmond, VA will now be showing the Steelers/Browns game instead of Pats/Ravens. Nothing like watching a blow out when the game of the week is on!
So, why did Richmond switch to the Ravens game? That’s ridiculous. They WILL be getting a nasty email.
So if FOX has the double header, why does CBS have more games? Their planning makes no sense.
@Nick
Ravens are within 75 miles of Harrisburg, PA so it becomes a secondary market. Same is the case with Washington for Baltimore…its a secondary market just as baltimore is a secondary market for Washington.
this means that the teams road games are in those markets.
@Tim
generally when the network has the doubleheader weekend the tend to have less games than the non doubleheader network
the reason is the doubleheader network wants a few games to go to a wider audience that more will see these games.
With the nondoubleheader network the coverage tends to be more local interest driven.
Houston, in the AFC South tied for first with Tennesse Titans, should be shown in Nashville TN.
What does Pittsburgh mean to us in Nashville?
Boo…
KCBS Los Angeles scheduled to show the Chargers vs Rams but show Ravens vs Pats to the end of regulation and then refuse to show OT. WTF! I tried calling KCBS-2 and the number is disconnected. Again, WTF! I wonder if CBS is getting a commission from DirecTV Sunday Ticket.
@Drewdove
NFL rules prohibit showing the OT…
IF the network IS NOT the doubleheader netwrok they can only show bonus coverage until 4:15pm…after that point they can only show replays.
Like this week on CBS post game show that likely aired until 4:30pm or 5:00pm….they could update viewers on what was happening and show play highlights.
If it is the doubleheader network they can only show bonus coverage un til 4:10pm.
There is also a difference in them switching to games vs bonus coverage….if they switched you to a different game for competative reasons say late in the 3rd quarter…where the switch everyone except primary and secondary markets (and those who would choose to stick to the game) then you can stay with the game till its conclusion except for viewers who are by law need to switch to their 4:15 local teams games.
For the 4pm games…..
If the network is the doubleheader network they can shift coverage to just one game until its conclusion and then lead most of the nation (except on the west coast) to the networks primetime tv programing. This happened last week when they showed the end of the Sandiego @Oakland game on CBS to finish the night.
BUT…if this is a 4pm game on the non doubleheader network (like this past week with CBS) the network can not switch to bonus coverage of another game….so say the Jets-Broncos finish early they cant switch viewers to the Oakland-San francisco game….Even if it was a close and exciting game.
IF YOU HAVE digital cable you can subscribe to the sports package and get the NFL network along with NFL redzone which shows you the network feed and flips between games.
Unlike what you may see in the commercial you see pretty much all the fantastic finishes live (or almost live..by showing a play from one game…then holding the tape a few seconds and showing the play from the other game without doing simultaneous broadcasts of 2 or 3 games on one screen)
Oh snap there was close games on both networks today.
Lately this season locally I haven’t been satisfied with the games they’ve been showing on CBS and FOX so its forced me to be creative like local blackout viewers have to do and that’s get streams of the games online.
My market didn’t show KC-HOU and that was clearly the game of the day. I had to stream that one online thankfully. BAL-NE was great too but KC-HOU was way better b/c the defenses sucked.
I’m so glad I didn’t get CLE-PIT what a boring game that would’ve been to watch.
MIA-GB was another good game but the Packers were sloppy so it would’ve been ugly also.
SD-STL turned into a decent game so for those people complaining about that game choked on their words. St. Louis is an exciting team to watch with Bradford. Chargers games are always close when their on the road but they need to start winning again.
OAK-SF was a bit of let down but it was still fun to watch and NYJ-DEN was absolute bullshit.
Overall, great day of football and most of the games today were great or better than expectations.
Hey
Ive been wondering this for over a while. considering the fact that i live in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and im a packers fan since i was a little kid. All our wisconsin affiliate stations
(WLUK FOX for GREEN BAY) and WFRV
(cbs for green bay) pretty much seem to do is carry and air our division rivals minnesota vikings games, that i hate and cant stand with a passion.
is it required for either our fox or cbs affiliate stations to carry vikings game if our packers are on a bye-week or playing a sunday-night/monday-night primetime games?
I live right in the middle of a bunch of teams in Russellville, AR. 6 hours from St. Louis. 6 hours from Kansas City. 6 hours from Nashville. 5 hours from Dallas, and 8 hours from New Orleans. Why the heck do I get ALL the freaking Saints games. They’re the FURTHEST team of all of those. I want a steady diet. I’m sick of watching Dallas and New Orleans! When will I get RAMS games?
I knew CBS should have carried NE/Balt in more markers. That game had the highest fan rating of any all day (according to the NFL site).
thanks for that super posts
