@Brown in Austin,…….CBS wont be reading this…you need to contact your local Austin station and complain.
If enough people complain then the station will flip the game they show.
Hi. Im kind of new here, and one of my friends referred me to check out this website of what i’ll be expectin to see on tv for every state ahead of advance.
My question is how do these local cbs stations for each 50 states, decide which games that will fit suitable for their tv station to air??? I mean I can see from this map The entire MOUNTAIN ROCKY STATES will be tuning to the Kansas City@Denver game, and then portions of California, Dallas, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Wisconsin and West Virginia will be tuning to Cincinatti@Indianapolis.
Its confusing
Even though I am an Iowa fan/alum, I dont care about the Colts. It’s nice Iowa players do well in the pros, but I am a KC fan (and a bigger pro fan than college). I’m more concerned with Iowa players when they are in college. To the Iowa dude that said there were no KC fans there, have you lived under a rock?
Brown in Austin,
You can try to ask, but I highly doubt Austin will switch; for the most part, most of Texas will carry Cowboys and Texans games, so I wouldn’t count on it.
@Marcus
The networks suggest to the stations what games the should air.
there are primary and secondary market rules that need to be followed.
The local markets are free to flip games.
The idea is to try and put on a game that will get the highest ratings.
The local markets knows more than what people at network HQ in new york city know so the local markets can buck the suggested broadcast.
Usually the priorirty is to
1. televize the home team in its primary, secondary and surrounding markets.
2. If their isnt a conflict the other option is to air a game of a division rival. That is why San Diego is airing KC @ denver instead of cincy @indy. That is why green bay is getting the vikings-bears game. That is why new england is getting the jets game.
Some markets will air teams they havent seen in a while which is why the west coast is airing the Colts game.
Other markets will televize some games of hometown players or players who were well known at their colleges who are playing now. Some examples…a few weeks ago Austin carried the Browns game where colt McCoy was playing. that is why Knoxville will air Houston games to see starting RBArain Foster for houston because he went to Tennessee. Last week Ft Smith carried the browns game to see Payton hillis who is the RB of the Browns.
OTher games are selected because it involves teams that the home market team will play that season. Since the South play the West division you may have some south cities picking up teams from the west divisions because they will play them later this year.
that is why some of the markets will flip from the Cowboys-giants game to one of the other games because their home market team will be playing some of the teams later this year.
Is Knoxville really switching to the Houston game? If they do it’s really stupid and will upset alot of Titans fans in East Tennessee. I mean really, he’s just one player that went to UT and the Titans are the STATE team that’s only 180 miles away. I can remember in Knoxville when EVERY game for INDY was on TV because of Manning and so many people complained about not getting the Titans games they switched over air ALL the Titans games. One player should not determine what’s aired regional over the state team. That’s like switching a game in Madison over 1 player that played for the Badgers over airing the Packers. Totally stupid for the reps of the regional TV markets.
BTW, they also announced Pennington, a local QB from Farragut but went to Marshall, is starting for Miami vs Titans. He would seem to me to have more ties to the Knoxville market than Foster who only played a couple of good years for UT. As I said before, TOTALLY ridiculous and stupid to NOT air the state team of the Titans because of 1 former player from a college team.
DJP
Oh ok. Its picture perfect clear. but then again, i have to ask. Since you stated
“The idea is to try and put on a game that will get the highest ratings”. Just how exactly would these local stations really know the games that their selecting, are high-rating standard or not? like every year the vast majority of the nation catches the cowboys vs giants. its always a must for FOX to televise that game
like whats the real history between those 2 rivals, compared to Arizona@Seattle or St.Louis@San Francisco games that they cant show anywhere else except for the home-team and the away-team? is there any difference?
Knoxville wil not switch games. Sometimes if they have the option they will air houston games. Their first priority is to air the Titans. They arent required to air the titans but that gets them the best ratings.
@Marcus
the local stations know better what teams are followed in their local area if there isnt a team near by.
for example, des Moines would have a better idea of what former Iowa or Iowa State stars are still popular in the area.
the ones that are the fan favorite are likely going to draw the biggest audience.
The station execs in new york city dont know who the people in boise tend to follow or who the popular college players that came out of Boise State.
the local stations also would know if there is a large number of fans in Austin who would want to watch Colt McCoy.
According to my CBS station, the Palm Springs are will get KC-Denver……. I’d like to think my e-mail had something to do with it.
so what would it take to get the stations to show the KC game in my area around Denver? Is it a local station thing or a broader national thing?
@Nate
Where do you live?
If you live around Denver you will get the KC 2 Denver game.
Looks like the Bengals 57 game sellout streak will end 11/21 vs Buffalo, according to the team website.
CBS has the doubleheader that day. If indeed the BUF/CIN game is blacked out, does WKRC 12 lose the early game and just go with the IND/NE game. And does WXIX 19 (FOX Cincy) get to show an early game in case of a blackout. If so, I’d say maybe Skins @ Titans. Thoughts? Is each market permitted 1 early game on 1 network and a late game on the other?
@DJP I live in iowa about 15 mins out of the yellow for KC @ DEN. In Davenport far eastern part of iowa
@nate and other iowans…
You need to contact your station in davenport and complain.
Its reasonable that you have a split of fans of the bears, vikings, packers, colts, rams, and chiefs.
If they havent carried the chiefs at all…then complain bigtime to the station by finding contact people in the PR office or the station VP, president, or programing manager.
IF ENOUGH COMPLAIN THE STATION WILL SWITCH.
If you live just inside the lines for davenport then look to move to a different city that would carry a different station or look to see what the other tv options in terms of satelitte or cable opt to carry stations from.
@Matt4162
Cincinati will air the Colts @ Pats and an early FOX either washington-tennessee or green bay-minnesota.
I have a feeling the #1 FOX team works washington @ tennessee because its the only shot left for them to see tennessee since FOX has the super bowl they want the #1 to see potential AFC teams. Sam e reason they work the cowboys-colts game.
Because of low tickets…that is why I feel cincy may switch games to air the Lions-Bills games to try and get people come out to the game by featuring the next opponent. Other markets do this..feature a game of the teams next opponent.
@DJP thanks. i know packers/vikings/bears/lions are almost always on fox and colts/chiefs always on cbs usually. i’ve seen the chiefs maybe once or twice this season i think on tv. thanks for the advice and looks like i’ll start complaining and see where it goes
@Nate…it will be difficult because the Colts id the game on….you need to make your argument based on how many games they showed of the Colts vs Chiefs.
Your station is in rock island
Based on my count it looks like the CBS aired 3 Colts games, 2 KC games and the head to head game between the two.
It will be hard to argue.
By the looks of it they try to split their coverage.
I would try to make the argument that this is a big divisional rival game that you want to really see. The next time they play later in the season is on the same week as buffalo @ minnesota which is a game they will likey pick up just like they will likely pick up the two bears games on the schedule for the CBS affiliate.
Where do you send emails to the local stations about the games? I’m in the L.A. market, thanks.
Why is Charlotte getting the 4pm Chiefs vs. Brocos game?
Go JETS!
Why is KC the country’s favorite team all of a sudden? They’ve been getting Cowboys-like clearance for reasons unknown.

Ryan in Charlotte,
The Carolina Panthers are playing in the early 1 pm time slot on FOX; since the Panthers is the road team, Charlotte therefore must carry the game, and by rule, the other station in the team’s primary market cannot air a game opposite the local team if that team plays on the doubleheader network. Since FOX has the doubleheader, CBS therefore only carries one game, and the aforemented rules means the CBS affiliate (WBTV) is restricted to airing the Chiefs-Broncos game. It has no choice.
@Ryan
Chris is technically wrong….
Carolina is on the road and CBS has only one game to air.
Had Carolina been home the rules would prevent a CBS game to air because of exclusivity of home games airing on local TV.
The road games dont have that exclusivity.
Had CBS had the doubleheader this week you wouldve gotten 2 games on CBS one in direct competition to the Panthers.
The local TV station feels it will lose money airing a game in direct competition with the Panthers game..even with it being on the road…so they air the late game to create higher ratings and more ad revenue for the station.
@DJP thanks sounds good. but also curious, i got back from the local cbs station that the colts and chiefs are in the same game window. But yet the colts play at noon CST and the chiefs at 315 CST. confused on that.
also, most of the local teams games are aired on fox. leaving cbs usually to teams like chiefs, colts, rams and etc.. he said they have lately aired more colts game because of them being really good and having important games and the chiefs… we know that story so understandable but said the better they start to become the more air time with their big games. atleast the chiefs have some important games coming up like: chargers, rams, titans, and oakland that could be for the afc west. so they have chances for more tv time if they aren’t flexed to primetime.
his response was reasonable and i understand. except for the colts/chiefs playing at different times but said to have the same window.
@nate
same window means only one game can air. they can only choose one game not two…so with them being in different slots make it impossible for them to flip. Had they been at the same time and say the colts game was a blow out they could switch to the KC game because it was closer.

Did they change the DH rules? It used to be here in NY, with either the Giants or Jets home, we would NEVER get the DH game. When we had years (a LOT of years, btw)where both teams were awful, it would get frustrating, now it seems we do get that DH game. What happened??
Yeah, they changed the rules about 10 years ago. Used to be that if the local team was home, you never got a doubleheader period; now it’s only if the doubleheader is on the other network.
The DH rule was changed back in 2002.
Now the rules are:
team is away…always get 3 games.
team is home you get 3 games ONLY IF (1) home team game is a sell out AND (2) the network that has that game also has the doubleheader that week.
this also applied to the two team markets of NYC and SF/OAK.
this wee the Jets on the road and the ginats at home. You get a third game because FOX has the doubleheader and Ginats game is on FOX. If CBS had it then no.
Good to see the Dallas affiliate understand geography and have its viewers see its other state team. Western MT did the right thing and pick the best early game available. Medford, Oregon should be doing the same along with many other Pacific and Mountain timezone affiliates. The Bengals-Colts is not the best game.
I have been waiting for the Browns to play in Arkansas all year. Everybody talks about how frustrated they are about not being able to watch Peyton Hillis. The ratings will skyrocket I guarantee you.
@ Josh Landers : You really think the Browns airing in Arkansas will make the ratings go shy high? LOL
Just a question: Did any member of the Chiefs or Broncos go to the University of Oregon?
@Chris,
I didnt see any players who went to Oregon or Oregon State (both colleges in Eugen market).
Remember this is a west coast city and these are west coast teams…more fans of these teams.
@Naqdop
The reason the west is mainly staying with the
Colts game is because of Peyton Manning. He hasnt been on out west much this season outside of national TV games.
@Josh
Browns in Arkansas because of Peyton Hillis…he player for Arkansas. last weeks patriots broans game aired in Ft Smith.
Well after what just happened, it looks like we got the wrong single-header game again this week. NY Jets @ Browns was a very epic and emotional game with a thrilling finish, compared to the Bungals @ Colts snoozer (even though the final margin is close). I’m sure this game will be on NFL Network’s NFL Replay this week.
A game were I had to see the overtime on my computer, because of the stupid 4:15 ET rule of bonus coverage. It must have really been a fluke that the ending of last weeks NY Jets @ Detroit game was SHOWN IN IT’S ENTIRETY and the 4:15 ET rule was not enforced by CBS.
@Aaron
Last week Jets @ Lions was a mistake.
I get NFL redzone through cable so they showed most of the OT.
I’m looking ahead to Thanksigivng weekend I don’t understand the schedule. Is there no national 4 pm game on the Sunday after? Do Fox and CBS always alter national 4 pm games every week even during holiday weeks?
