UPDATES:
all WV stations: JAX-IND to CLE-CIN

@WHATIKNOW
If what your saying is “The Doubleheader-Network gets to decide and assign which games each and every local-cbs stations in the U.S. will receive on Sunday”, depending on where a person lives, then why cant the local-stations itself choose and pick which games that they feel might draw ratings/viewers, and that they might find of interest??
Like for Example, I live in Omaha, Nebraska. and I wrote to KMTV, our local cbs station, and I asked them
“Once the network has already assigned your station to air a game for Sunday, why cant your station be given the chance to pick and select a game of your choosing that you might feel Nebraskans will benefit from watching”? they wrote back
“I’m sorry to hear that your disappointed. I understand your frustrations and concerns. but here in KMTV We really don’t have the ability to pick and choose the games for our station to show, opposed to what the network has already assigned us with. The network in New York gives us a call, and tells us which games will be airing and thats what they’ll assign us with”
Wow, Talk about a conspiracy runnin through the veins of the CBS*SPORTS network
God I love Ohio (NOT!)
I’ll pose this question somebody else asked on the Fox threat; rate your CBS announcers.
1. Gumbel. Don’t know why. Always have liked listening to his games. Dierdorf is a hoot.
2. Eagle. Don’t see nearly enough of him in Ohio. Used to call a ton of Bengals games but not anymore.
3. Nantz. A bit low-key for my taste. Simms is money.
4. Criqui. Hasn’t missed a beat since the 80s. Granted, a bit boring sometimes. Works way too many obscure games.
5. Harlan. Don’t like him. Points out the obvious too much (“The defense is in a 4-3. Four in the secondary.”) Wilcots saves him.
6. Macatee. Both him and his partner just plain average. Gannon, loved you as a quarterback but not an analyst. Can’t believe he used to be third in the batting order.
7. Johnson (mainly just to piss off the blogosphere). Have always been annoyed by his perpetual yellingness (yes I know that’s not a word), and apparently neither does the network since he’s always worked such obscure games in his 10+ years at the network.
Haven’t seen Dedes, but since he’s paired with Cross that team probably sucks but it may not be Dedes’ fault.
Greg Gumbel is the best.
@ Leonard
The responses from most CBS affiliates are very similar to what you received and generic. I think it is an automatic common response when viewers complain.
A decent distribution for the games here. I thought the west getting red would get blue instead. The Chiefs are a surprise but I do see why the Jaguars-Colts take priority. I like how all the division rival areas are getting KC-STL.
The NE corner of the country should get the AFC East game since they are a division rival and that the Dolphins are in the wild card race.
@Leonard
The doubleheader network gets to choice which game it will carry if its in the home team market and is only forced to carry one of the two games due to the home team game not selling out
Your response ifs BS…the local affiliate has the control of what games to air. Th network HQ can overrule if they feel the game would not get good ratings. Generally the local market understand what teams are followed and what teams arent.
Someone at CBS in new york may think the people in omaha are fans of the Chiefs given their close proximety but the station at omaha really knows from the ground level what team is followed the most b y the locals.
@DJP
Hey, I tried to ask u about this on last weeks comments, but i guess u either didnt see it or just ignored it lol so i guess ill try again…since i know u know alot about how all these things work, do u know, or have any idea at all, why they moved the pats/bears game from 1pm to 4:15pm last week? It didnt really make sense to me since they had all those horrible games on early so i just wanted to know if there was just somethin i was missing….
Regarding announcers . . . my least favorite announcer is Cris Collinsworth. His grating voice gets on my nerves. He also does too much player-cheerleading. The way he goes on sometimes you’d think us football viewers were so stupid we wouldn’t know that many NFL players are excellent athletes. No kiddin’, Cris . . . really? I ~never~ would have guessed that professional football teams want to put their best players on the field with the expectation they will make positive plays. HOT DAMN!!! >>> NBC should put Tom Hammond with Al Michaels and send Cris Collinsworth to the showers . . .
@Thomas
They moved the game because of the team records as a feature game. The early game has nothing to do with it because a second game has more audience and a larger part of the audience. There is more ad revenue the network can make in the doubleheader game..especially if they have a headliner game of two very good teams where its like a super bowl preview.
DJP
As much as I agree with what your saying, thats the response i got from the news anchor of KMTV when i sent them that email.
The only way the network can grant or deny their appeal is if they contact the HQ itself, and complain that the game their assigning them with, wont get much ratings/viewers.
your saying “the local affiliate has the control of what games to air”. According to their response, I disagree. so idk what to tell you. like i said, its a conspiracy because the network are on everyone’s tail and limiting them with what they can/can’t air. its a whole bunch of nonsense.
I mean if the Network HQ have the ability to overrule the stations ability of airing a certain game opposed to what the network has suggested and assigned them with,then how exactly would the network really know if the game itself that the station will show and air, will draw the ratings and viewers for the station to gain revenue??
It would simply be easier if the local-affiliates in all 50 states, conducted a poll of all the possible marquee matchups on their homepage wthat the network gives them, and by the end of midweek, whichever high percentage game that the people ended up voting for, thats the game they’ll show and air for sunday, without any exceptions
And another question
If Sacramento is really a secondary market to San Francisco, then how come Sacramento elected to receive the KC-STL matchup, and San Francisco didnt??
They played Thursday night. So what exactly is San Francisco’s issue? California has a late game on the same network, featuring the Raiders. so by rule, San Francisco should receive 3 games, not 2.
Unless if im missing something?!?!?!
Leonard: It has more to do with the Raiders blackout. CBS couldn’t air both games in SF, so they chose to air Pitt-NYJ.
Why did all of WV switch the the Browns/Bengals game?
@Lenord
because Raiders are blacked out the SF/Oakland can only air 2 games. This is true with all 32 hometeam markets. The secondary markets still air 3 games even if the home team game doesnt sell out.
Sacramento, Monterey, and other outside the area can air 3 games.
Since CBs has the doubleheader they chose to air the late game and the FOX airs the early game. since SF played on Thursday they are free to choose whichever FOX game they want to air at 1pm. Usually the 1pm game means it would be San Fran game on the FOx affiliate.
@Cody
I guess because WV didnt want anyone to come out and watch their 1pm football game. I can see some of the border stations which cover Ohio airing that game like Parkersburg and Wheeling.
@ Cory
Man, your list is weak!!!
Harlan and GuJo are beasts!!!
According to zap2it.com KHSL Chico, CA is listing Jacksonville at Indianapolis
Evaluating the CBS broadcasting teams:
1. Ian Eagle, Dan Fouts: Makes the game a pleasure to view.
2. Gus Johnson, Steve Tasker: Underrated tandem.
3. Kevin Harlan, Solomon Wilcots: Pretty good, voice of one, knowledge of other makes solid team.
4. Jim Nantz, Phil Simms: Simms makes this team better.
5. Greg Gumbel, Dan Dierdorf: Gumbel is ok, Dierdorf is a buffoon.
6. Don Criqui, Steve Beuerlein: Rather pedestrian.
7. Bill Macatee, Rich Gannon: Unimpressive pair.
8. Spereo Dedes, Randy Cross: The latter is nauseating.
Regarding the debate about the carrying of games, I believe the local affiliate dictates what is to be shown. If it was the network, CBS would have shoved Peyton Manning’s and the Colts game on everywhere asides the cities and immediate local markets of the other teams.
I think the programme director in Omaha, NE was just passing the buck when he replied. Whoever makes the decision to broadcast a particular game differs with each station. At some, it could be the GM, others, the owners will want a particular game, and still others, it could be the sports director, or programme director. Furthermore, some just take whatever the network suggests. The network may suggest which may be most appealing game, but the local station makes the final decision.
It actually is the network that decides. I’ve heard this from people at both CBS and FOX stations. The local station can request a change but the network doesn’t have to agree. FOX is more lenient on changes than CBS.
>>> I think the NFL has “flexed” its muscles for next week. I believe SAN DIEGO @ CINCINNATI was moved to Sunday afternoon at 4:15 PM instead of being the Sunday night game and the Eagles game replaced it on NBC’s broadcast. SEATTLE @ TAMPA BAY was also flexed to 4:15 PM from its original spot at 1 o’clock. I’m not 100% sure, but I do believe that’s what’s going on for Week 16.
@JP
KHSL Chico official website will broadcast Jaguars @ Colts and then Broncos vs Raiders.
Used to be I’d click on a certain portion of the map, and Google would tell me the affiliate covering that area. I clicked on the CBS early-game map, and all it did was take me to a JPEG version of the map. What happened?
Why does Plattsburgh, NY get the national game? Those are BUF fans there.
Have any of these network suits ever left NYC or LA?
RD Frable: That’s disabled on Sundays. Too much bandwidth.
Anyone know why the KC/STL game was taken off the air in the bay area? It was scheduled to show earlier in the week and there isn’t a local game on in the early slot. Thoughts?
Daneish: When the Raiders blacked out, it meant CBS could only air one game in the Bay Area. They picked Steelers-Jets.
I agree with what easyed says
“Whoever makes the decision to broadcast a particular game differs with each station”
But Im just saying that every station in the Rockies, mainly all across Minnesota, Wisconsin, North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, and Missouri have their tails plugged to the network, and their the ones that are assigning them with games that they might find “High-rating implication”
Most people say that Nebraska is mainly a Kansas City Chiefs territory, but i disagree. their are Broncos and colts fans here too. The network itself, are way too biased when it comes to ratings and revenue.
If the networks just simply conducted a census report from 2008 up until now in Nebraska to see how many people are really Chiefs fan here on the side of this Omaha block, there are not a whole lot of Chiefs fans. Only Broncos and Colts fans.
So, admin or DJP: whoever can answer this
How would your map really know that all these local and major nfl cities with an nfl team, have a blacked*out or a sell*out game?? Thats what i have to wonder
@Leonard
Omaha is a primarily KC market because of its relative close proximity to KC. That is true across the country.
Sure in every city you will find fans from other cities.
Yes in Lincoln nebraska which covers much of the central and western part of the state you will find more Broncos fans because they are closer to Denver. Lincoln you will also see some people who are fans of prominent Nebraska players.
A game is a sell out is publicly announced and for many teams all the games are sold out before the first snap of the regular season.
the ones that dont sell out has alot to do with opponent and their teams records.
For week 16…it looks as if Tampa Bay and cincinati will not sell out, Buffalo and cleveland should sell out because they are plying spoiuler to a divisional rival playoff team.
@admin
The local networks have the final say because they do not have to carry network programming if they choose to. A local station can say if you dont give us game A then they wont televise any football games and its within their right to do that.
Local affiliate have done this before if they protest the PC of some special show or movie the network will air.
DJP,
You are right that local affiliates can and do preempt network programming on occasion. However, any affiliate which preempts the network’s lineup too often will lose its status. There’s always another channel in the market that will be happy to trade Andy Griffith reruns for a network affiliation.
