Am I missing something?HOU can show the Cowboys gm up against Texans on the road?When was that rule made up?Proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that this krap get’s made-up on just about a wk to wk basis.OK SE TX you wanted back into the NFL.Your all actually Dallas fans so bad you’ll cry to watch them at 4-9?I can understand if it was Philly or NYG but this is ludicrous.LA Texans,LA Jaguars,LA Bills,LA Vikings.Atl/Sea might be an imp gm iregardless of your myopishness,shame on all of you.
So I live in Pennsylvania, big Eagles fan, so of course NY/Phi right? How stupid of me FOX, of course i’m much more interested in Bal/No. Makes no sense at all!!!!!!!!!!!!
Paul M. Hedberg,
I actually questioned this myself a few weeks ago and I found out that the “no opposing games” rule only applies to the HOME team’s market. Since the Texans are on the road, FOX 26 CAN air an early game.
The rule is that if the game is a sellout, the home team has exclusivity and no other games can air at the same time. Again, this does not apply to Houston because the Texans are the road team. This means Indianapolis, Nashville, St. Louis, and Miami have no choice and must go with the late game since their respective teams’ home games are sold out. Had the Bengals sold out, Cincinnati would’ve been subject to this rule. Generally, the road team markets will air a late game because the other station knows that people are going to be watching the local club and simply don’t want to go up against that game. But considering that road markets usually air the late game, I think the NFL SHOULD make a rule out of it. Houston would’ve gotten better ratings out of Falcons-Seahawks even with the state-wide support of the Cowboys. I think this rule should even apply to some other markets in the team’s fan base area because those stations would also get better ratings. For example, I live in Knoxville and the Titans are playing early on CBS. There is also a lot of Atlanta Falcon support here. So it makes sense that the local WTNZ FOX 43 went with Atlanta-Seattle because of the Falcons but I think that the station would get higher ratings by taking the late game anyway when the Titans are early on a CBS doubleheader.
According to Zap2it KDSM Des Moines Iowa has switched to NO/BAL
@Gerardo,
Chris Myers is only good for FOX’s NASCAR coverage. He’s knows nothing about football.
Why does the NFL always INSIST on giving the Panama City area Buccaneers games? We’re nowhere near Tampa Bay and I don’t know of a single Buccaneers fan in this city!
Toadnuke,
They’re trying to support a team from the STATE. I would think Tallahassee should be airing the Bucs over the Falcons since the city is in Florida. Yes, Miami and West Palm Beach almost never air Bucs games, but that’s Dolphin territory and the stations don’t want a Tampa Bay fan base to develop there.
@ Chris
The only part of the Panhandle that doesn’t regularly see the Bucs is the westernmost part (Pensacola, which is in the same market as Mobile, Ala.) thanks to the large number of Saints fans in that DMA, where the Saints have radio and preseason TV affilates. The Bucs don’t have any there.
Tallahassee’s stations, esp. WTLH FOX 49, often have to choose between the Falcons and the Bucs. As for your point about South Florida’s stations, that’s what made me so shocked to see that they aired TB-WAS last weekend.
@All
When team is on the road you can play a game against the home team…even if its a single game network.
The issue is ratings. Higher ratings mean more ad revenue.
Since some of the CBS games are meaningless with zero playoff implications the local FOX station decided to air the better game with playoff implications because they know fans want to see that game.
Usually home market teams will not air games directly against their hoem team road games unless they have to (when that network has the doubleheader).
@chris
When you get to this point in the season where teams are out of the plyoffs the pattern of games airing changes.
Generally their isnt a game on the opposite network than the home team playing (home game exclusivity) on the road unless there has to be when the other network has the doubleheader. For example this week Atlanta plays away and CBS has the doubleheader so Atlanta game has a CBS competition game.
Now where teams are out of it the local networks know the fans want to see games that matter vs games that are meaningless…even when the local team is plying.
Houston does have alot of Dallas fans..plus this is a divisional rivalry game so that was the reason for the switch.
Dont be surprised to see more carolina markets shifting away from the Carolina game to air either the saints, Falcons, or Eagles-Giants.
@Marcus…
part of the reason for the decision of that station to air the Bucs game over the Falcons game were three reasons:
1. Atlanta game is the late game which will run the FOX programing late on Sunday night with its likely overrun. tampa Bay is the early slot.
2. This game is with Detroit who happens to be playing the Lions…where you have Calvin Johnson (out of GA Tech) and Matthew Stafford (out of Georgia) playing for the Lions so there are a number of people in their area who will follow the Lions because of these two players.
3. Tampa Bay is playing for the playoffs and Detroit wants to pull an upset so this game may be alot more exciting than the Falcons-Seahawks game where if it goes like how the Giants played there could be 35-3 at halftime.
Geraldo,
1. I agree. Stockton.
2. I agree again. Rosen. His analyst partner is underrated too.
3. Kenny Albert. His voice is somewhat annoying but he knows his stuff and is experienced and is paired with a quality analyst.
4. Ron Pitts. I haven’t warmed up to Lynch yet though.
5 & 6. Toss up between Buck and Brennaman. They’re practically clones. Aikman knows his stuff but is so low-key that he goes unnoticed. Don’t like Billick.
7. Chris Myers. I’ve only seen one game with him this season. He seems to be a fill-in guy since Fox rarely has seven games a Sunday. Get him a regular analyst that he can work with week-to-week.
8. Rose. Maybe it was Holt but the Carolina-Cleveland broadcast was a disaster. Same thing, get him an analyst that he can work with week-to-week instead of whoever’s available.
No surprise to see two South Carolina markets shift games. If anything, all markets except Charlotte should be showing a game OTHER than Arizona-Carolina. The Panthers better hope Andrew Luck goes pro since they’ll likely have the top pick in the draft. Eastern North Carolina should show Washington-Dallas, and South Carolina should show Atlanta-Seattle. So no surprise to see Greenville, SC flip as there may very well be just as many Falcons fans as Panthers fans.
The Saints-Ravens game needs to be shown to more of the country. Bad decision by Fox to relegate this inter-conference game to regional coverage. Tampa should be showing this game instead since the Saints are their DIVISION RIVAL.
NM and KS should be getting the better green or red game. Two non playoff teams is a ratings bust.
PRAISE JESUS that FOX is not showing the Eagles in most of Kansas. I have had enough of convicted felon Michael Vick. I don’t care if it’s 5-8 Washington vs. 4-9 Dallas. ANYTHING is better than having convicted felon Michael Vick shoved down our throat week after week after week after week after week after week after week after week after week.

I DON’T CARE. ANY GAME WITHOUT CONVICTED FELON MICHAEL VICK IS HEAVEN.
FOX stations shouldn’t necessarily not air the late game simply because the game could run into primetime. I would be more hesitant on CBS affiliates doing so, however, because it delays the start times for its primetime shows. FOX, on the other hand, joins programming in progress, but the 7 pm hour is reruns or show burnoffs (I think it was going to burn off the canceled “Running Wilde” but changed its mind) so it makes more sense for the sake of Animation Domination.
WTTE on their website indicates that they’re showing on early game but the teams are “TBA”.
@DJP
Hey, I tried to ask u about this on last weeks comments, but i guess u either didnt see it or just ignored it lol so i guess ill try again…since i know u know alot about how all these things work, do u know, or have any idea at all, why they moved the pats/bears game from 1pm to 4:15pm last week? It didnt really make sense to me since they had all those horrible games on early so i just wanted to know if there was just somethin i was missing….
@David
Youre ridiculous…leave vick alone, he paid his debt to society, get over it…besides that, if u didnt want to see vick and the eagles vs. the giants, Naqdop was sayin that saints/ravens is still a better game than redskins/cowboys so it didnt make sense to show that game over those BOTH the nyg/phil and balt/no games…
@thomas
they moved the Pats-Bears game late because of the teams records. It was viewed as a potential super bowl previous where both teams could be teams that get byes going into the playoffs.
Before the dome burst …I said what the NFL should have done is flip the Jets and Giants game times and moved the Pats late.
The doubleheader network want in the doubleheader matchup a game pitting two great teeams based on record.
@Chris
If the game runs late the primetime lineup could potentially be delayed.
The big affect this has is on late local news which is a revenue junket for FOX affiliates because it starts earlier than others so its exclusive. If that news runs late then fewer viewers will watch.
Ok, i just didnt understand why the pats/bears and jets/dolphins games were both at the same time when it seemed like those 2 were the 2 best games last weekend on CBS…before they played out obviously haha, so i didnt know why theyd put the 2 best games at the same time….thanks for the response!
Thomas, there are a ton of Cowboys fans in Wichita, and the Fox affiliate there usually shows the Cowboys unless the Chiefs are playing at the same time on Fox, which can happen at most twice a year.
And I am not backing off of Vick. If you or I would have done what he did, you or I would still be in prison and would not have gotten our previous job back. I’m sick of the media bending over and kissing Vick’s A$$ after he KILLED other living beings.
Thomas, I am also very happy I don’t have to watch the Ravens and arrogant a$$hole Ray Lewis, who skated on a murder charge.
LOL@people being pissed that Vick killed some dogs. Get over it. He is a convicted felon and he will earn more money this year than you will in a lifetime.
GUESS WHAT! >>> I’ve got a “stable” full of fighting field mice who I’m going to spar against some vicious woodchucks at the backyard barbeque next week. Then I’m going to shanghai some bent beavers and pit them against a gang of sadistic, nut-shorted squirrels. It’s gonna be the BARNYARD BATTLE OF THE CENTURY . . .
GO FALCONS
@David
Haha agreed on the Ray Lewis thing…technically he didnt get his previous job back since hes not with atlanta anymore so lol…all of the media that ive heard always says that people may never forgive him for what he did, and that may be right, but that still doesnt deny the fact that his play on the field is great right now…what he did in the past still doesnt take away the fact that hes exciting to watch play football. I HATE Kobe Bryant with a passion cause of what he did, but im not goin to not watch the lakers play cause of what he did…ill root against them and thats fine, but not wantin to watch a game just cause kobe, or in this case vick, is playin in it is just ridiculous. The crime that vick did still doesnt mean that the nyg/phil game isnt the best one this weekend….really u should WANT to watch that game so u can root against vick as much as u want!
@Johnfallon
AGREED
@Carter Gorman
LOL!!
@Johnfallon
actually Vick is on a restricted income this year because the rest is to pay off debtors by the courts.
@David – If NYG-PHI is shown where you live and you despise Michael Vick as much as you say you do (or are you just making controversial statements to stand out?), it’s simple: CHANGE THE CHANNEL, or go to your local sports bar to watch the game you want to see. I live in North Carolina and I’m stuck with the Panthers v. Arizona at 1pm instead of my Falcons at 4pm, so I will watch whatever’s on CBS instead. Simple solution to your issue.
@Thomas – Ray Lewis has always been a Raven, and the incident that you’re speaking of happened in Atlanta after a Super Bowl party. He was given a deal where he was charged with obstruction of justice in exchange for his testimony against the other two men in question, who were later acquitted, and received one year of probation and fined $250K by the NFL. The prosecution didn’t have enough evidence against either man to prosecute them. Whether or not there was a cover-up is purely speculation. Here’s the story from CNN-SI below:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/news/2000/06/04/lewis_agreement/
I’m so sick of the damn Panthers. Maybe I need to move to Georgia.
How about moving the Panthers to Los Angeles? Then we could get better games on Fox here in SC.
@ Cory
I think Pitts has potential but he’s not exciting on big plays, maybe a got a little bias for Lynch because I liked his D(btw, I’m a Pack not a Bucs fan)
I know FOX doesn’t have the Double-header this week, but if they did I’d like to see DETROIT @ TAMPA BAY at 1 and then the FALCONS at 4:15. As it stands I do get to see ATL ‘cuz I’m “local”, but the only game on at 1 o’clock here in Meansville is JAX @ INDY and while it will probably be a good game I have not yet gotten over my “I’m-sick-of-Indy” fever so I wish I could watch another game; BUF @ MIA would be ok. And so it goes . . .
@Blitz Money
Yeah, i know hes always been with the ravens, i was talkin about vick not bein with atlanta anymore…
Is it in Aikman’s & Joe Buck’s contract to only announce NFC East games? New Orleans and Ravens will by far be the better game at 1pm.
What a shame and sham. To have to watch a sucka__ Cowboys team play and miss Eagles at the Giants! Unless of course you have like a gazillion bucks to pay for the NFL Network and have Direct TV
Im from Kansas and im sick and tired of watching the pathetic cowboys get there asses beat week and week out,why not televise a real game???
Gainesville, FL shows Eagles Giants in my TiVo this morning sigh. No Tampa love here unless they’re wrong.
Is there a member of the Eagles or Giants who went to Boise State? I notice most of Idaho showing the Seahawks, but Boise is shaded red.
I just can’t believe that Fox would choose to broadcast the Redskins vs Cowboys game over the Ravens vs Saints game????? Two lousy teams that are both out of the playoffs and fighting to stay out last place over a game featuring the defending Super Bowl champs and another playoff bound team??? What idiot makes these decisions???
starting Eagles safety Quinton Mikell went to Boise St.
Our local affiliate is not showing the Carolina-Arizona game, which I thought they were required to do since we’re in their market. I’m not complaining, because we’re getting to see the Giants/Eagles game. But how can they do that?
Pecan Man:
Unless you’re within 75 miles of Charlotte or Phoenix, there’s nothing that says you have to air this game.
Sounds like a lot of Fox affiliates in the Carolinas are abandoning the Panthers ship.
Fox aired NOTHING in the way of football during the Eagles Giants time slot.. instead… we had re-runs of House, Cops and kalidescope on Ice…. I’ve been Fox-hole’d.
FALCONS won again; played better than they did last week at CAROLINA. And since NEW ORLEANS was kind enough to lose at BALTIMORE today ATLANTA has a 2-game lead. Yea!
Next week on Monday night the evil SAINTS are coming to visit The Dome.
GO FALCONS
@Pecan Man
Secondary markets are not required to air the home team sell out games.
They are required to air the road games.
Next week with Carolina on NFLN you will not see them but you are forced to see them against Atlanta on the road.
