Red = CBS doubleheader
Blue = FOX doubleheader
In Week 17, both networks have doubleheaders.
Game in italics are subject to flex scheduling.
I am probably more cynical than most, but the naivete displayed by the posters here is amusing. The guy who didn’t understand why Fox sent its No. 2 team to Dallas/Philly… then, a few weeks ago, some guy pointed out that as the season progressed Fox and CBS would send their top teams to cover top teams so they would know them before the playoffs…. Do these people live under a rock? In fact, odds are the NFC championship game will be the first time Troy and Joe will see Atlanta…. and the only reason they ever saw the Saints was because they were playing Dallas…. and heaven forbid if the Seahawks move on…… Fox’s top announcing team will surely be in Chicago should philly or Seattle win… and how can Murdoch’s minions resist another exciting edition of Bears-Packers … especially afer those two duds the Falcons and Saints played earlier this year….
it’s all money and markets… the cameras and announcers will always go to the teams and games that promise the most fans and the highest ratings… Minnesota-Philadelphia on NBC…… and, while I missed on Philly-Dallas for week 17… i did notice how Fox gave it priority over NO-TB
Just wanted to thank the web admin(s) for providing a valuable resource. Thanks and hope to see this website next season!
I miss the color maps! I’m having a vicious case of MAP WITHDRAWAL . . . and it’s an ugly thing.
ALSO — Joe and Troy will probably *need* a map to find the GEORGIA DOME ‘cuz they ain’t been there in so long . . . not that it’s a Great Loss or anything. I don’t think they’re a better announcing Team than ROSEN/RYAN or STOCKTON/DAVIS in my opinion. And so it goes . . .
@Binx,
Naivete…..
FOX #1 team will likely do the Atlanta game unless Seattle pulls an upset and plays at Atlanta.
Part of the reason…its a later primetime slot where they expect more viewers than their 1pm Sunday slot.
I do know for a fact when CBS has the super bowl their #1 team go and see potential teams who would play in the Super Bowl, One Season they worked the Bills @ Bears game because that was the only timne they wiould get to see them that year prior to the super bowl.
Hmm . . . if SEATTLE plays as well as they did against the RAMS it’s at least *possible* they could beat the SAINTS. Don’t think I’d want to place a bet on the SEAHAWKS, however! I’m kinda intrigued by the BAL/KC matchup tomorrow.
Ultimately I don’t care who announces the FALCONS game AS LONG AS THE FALCONS WIN IT.
For next season….
San Francisco @ Baltimore will be on national TV either ESPN or NBC. reason…2 brothers facing each other as coaches.
Also if in Cleveland…Holmgren decides he will coach the team this season then Seattle @ Cleveland will also be on national TV on either ESPN or NFL Network. If Cleveland pulls an asistant from another club who they will be playing will also make the game on national TV.

Outside of San Fran @ Balt they will pick games for San Fran and Oakland that are home games to open up the TV market to more games and network doubleheaders.
Expect Oakland and San Francisco to each get 3 national TV games. Oakland because they look to be better next year and San Fran because of their new coach. Outside of QB many believe that San Fran has alot of talent.
For thanksgiving game
Buffalo/Miami @ Dallas (CBS game)
GB/Chi/SF/Atl @ Detroit (FOX Game)
@DJP
How do u guess all that?
Knowing their historical patterns of picking games.
They also anticipate how teams will be next year. So teams like Detroit and Tampa Bay are young and competitive teams so you will see both of them on ESPN or NBC (most likely on ESPN)–they play each other next year so I wouldnt be surprised to see them be an early season matchup in say week 3 on ESPN.
With division matchups like the cowboys-Eagles….they CANT but both games on national TV one has to be given to FOX.
Next year because of the scheduling formating you have:
Dallas @ Jets
Dallas @ Patriots
giants @ Jets
Giants @ Patriots
Right now FOX gets all 4 games but the games of note with significance of giants @ jets and giants @ patriots (superbowl rematch).
Fox wants to be able to have games seeing the Jets and the Patriots because they are good teams. But national TV want these games too. Giants-Jets game have been on FOx is 2003 and CBS in 2007, so now its NBCs turn in getting the game.
The Colts-Patriots also has a pattern where it alternates between being a CBS game or an NBC game.
NBC tends to get 6-8 divisional games, 4-6 inter divisional games, and 4-6 interleague games.
Also both ESPN and NBC are paying lots of money so they need to get really good games.
The NFL also wants to air on national TV other significant games where teams are connected like past superbowl games or coaches came from one team to another, or like with San Fran 2 baltimore next year you will have coaching brothers facing off.
The other games are say a big player move between two teams like say if Vince Young isnt with the Texans anymore but he lands say in Carolina and Carolina hosts Tennessee next season so you could see that game on NFL Network.
Another example….in 2012 season you will have Saints @ Chargers where Drew Brees will make his first return trip to San Diego so this game will be on NBC or ESPN. They played in 2008 at New Orleans (and they moved the game to London).
“Outside of San Fran @ Balt they will pick games for San Fran and Oakland that are home games to open up the TV market to more games and network doubleheaders.”
If the NFL is serious about opening up the Bay Area market, the first thing they need to do is to draw the schedule so that the 49ers’ home games on Sunday afternoons, as well as the Raiders’ home games that have a chance of being sold out, are always on the doubleheader network.
How come raiders and 49ers arent allowed to play home games (or something like that) at the same time?
Because of the rule that says home games can’t have any competition. If they aired one, they couldn’t air the other.
(And yes, I know the Raiders are usually blacked out, but they don’t want to take the chance they might not be…)
If the Jets aren’t in the Super Bowl (and maybe even if they are) . . . Sunday, September 11, 2011 — the tenth anniversary of that wretched day. I think Giants at Jets is an absolute lock for that night’s NBC game.
@luqman
the exclusivity rule where a home game soldout is show exclusivly on the air also affects the new york city market too.
The Raider/49ers and Giants/Jets must be in different time slots.
If they are both on the road then they can play at the same slot.
The NFL will not allow them to play at the same time except under unusual circumstances.
a few seasons ago because Yom Kippor fell on Sunday night they initially had the Jets game at home scheduled for 4:15pm which conflicts with the holy evening. Many Jets season ticket holders are Jewish. The league allowed them to move the home game up to 1pm to prevent this conflict so the exclusivity rule was waived.
With Oakland/San Francisco and the league wanting to close the season with divisional games that means either San Francisco @ Stlouis or Oakland @ Kansas City to close the season. Given they had Oakland @ KC close this year it will likely be San Fran @ St Louis. They could schedule both.
The league wants NYC to get the most games so they tend to schedule the home games in correlation to the doubleheader network allowing for 3 games to be shown.
also to try and maximize this look for Oakland or San Francisco to be on national TV (NBC, ESPN, NFLN) a combined 6 times during the season.
This past season made it very difficult because you had West vs West in divisional play so this meant two of the teams 5 non divisional road games were going to be played on the west coast which meant it had to go at 1pm. This is why if you looked back at the schedule the weeks San Fran were on TV was when they were playing west road games to eliminate this scheduling conflict over the course of the season.
For next season there will be a minimum of 3 national games. why you have 17 weeks, 10 west coast games(8 home, 2 west division rivals not in missouri) for each team so without national games you cant fill 20 4pm games in 17 4 pm slots so 3 of them must be on national TV.
@uncleartie
The Giants-Jets game next season will be on NBC next season for certainty.
The reason is the last games in 2007 and 2003 were kept by there network so this one will be in national TV irrelevent of playoff teams or not. This was already a dun deal.
This game WILL NOT be on NBC on Septemeber 11.
If the Jets happen to win then they will open at home on Thursday to start the season. The game will not be against the Giants.
It would be against a divisional opponent or San Diego, Kansas City, or Jacksonville.
Because of it be the 10th anniversary i wouldnt at all be surprised if the Jets don’t win the super bowl and play on Thursday that they will opt to have both Jets and Giants play on the road to open the season or have one of them open at home on Monday night and the other plays Sunday on the road.
Giants @ Jets is a big enough matchup that they NBC wants this game either at the end of September to help launch the new TV season of shows or in November during the ratings sweeps month.
the November network ratings month is a BG part of the reason why the Colts-Patriots game always happens in November.
In Novermber 2011 during the November ratings sweeps period expect to see the following games on NBC:
Colts @ Patriots
Giants @ Jets
Eagles @ Falcons
Chicago @ Green Bay
@DJP
Im a rams fan what games do you see them playing on natl tv besides the above you listed and why rams@steelers do you think? thanks
Really enjoyed this site and glad I found it and people told me about it. Thanks for everything DJP and admin.
@luqman
St Louis has a few options
home: Saints, Ravens, eagles
away: Cowboys, giants, steelers, packers
There is a 50/50 shot their game @san francisco will be on ESPN or NFLN. Between Oakland and San Francisco they need to put at least 3 games on national TV…will likely see more than that…but they usually do home games or west road games to limit scheduling conflicts.
I see them get an early game on NBC as an potential good team this year like a game either hosting the Eagles or @ Packers or Cowboys.
If the Packers or Steelers win it all I could see either of them hosting St Louis in the opener on Thursday.
If the Packers win it all they will either host St louis or tampa bay in the game because this game would aslo feature two young upcomming QBs in the league.
I see 3 games on national TV.
Now that the Super Bowl has been played and won by the Packers, I wonder what the NFL will do if there is a lockout and it effects next years schedule- do they put a schedule in place whereas the first two weeks of the season no divisional games are played? Any thoughts?
The schedule for 2011 is out now….
My observations…
Week 1…Saints open against the Packers. That game should wait till later. I think a better game would have been Tampa Bay visiting.
Giants @ Jets NOT on national TV ???? Instead on Christmas eve.
The Bay area is screwed. Only 4 games combined will be on national TV. In weeks 1,8,10,13,14, 1nd 16 they will get 3 games and will on weeks 4 and 17 if Oakland is sold out. weeks 14 and 16 both on the road so you will get 3 games. The other weekends will need a san fran sell out. You would think the schedule makers would do national networks games so the bay area could get extra games and pick up 3 games….but no…instead the weeks san fran is national are the weeks of cbs doubleheaders but oakland is hosting an NFC team so you can only get 2 games.
There is a potential World series conflict in Oakland if NL wins all star game so games in AL location in week 7. The saving grace is they play a divisional opponent in KC so they could flip locations when Oakland vivists late in the season at KC. If NL hosts and its in Miami then there will be some serious scheduling issues where they could have to move the game till Tuesday because its against Denver and the game cant easily be rescheduled. An alternate solution if Miami makes the playoffs are:
week 5 Miami bye San Diego @ Denver
week 6: San Diego and Denver have bye
week 7: Denver @ Miami
reschedule week 5: Denver @ Miami San Diego bye
week 6: San Diego @ Denver
week 7: Miami and Denver bye
again New Orleans agains hosts an NBC game in direct conflict with the World Series…also hosting an interleague opponent and a super bowl rematch in indy.
because week 16 is locked and cant be flexed for Sunday night game with many of the games on Saturday Christmas eve….I wonder if week 10 is also part of the flexing with the schedule.
Indy @ new england isnt until week 13 on the first weekend in December on NBC…..why isnt this in the ratings month of November…
When can we expect an update to the site for 2011? When are the double headers?
Don’t like how the Bye Weeks are structured for the upcoming season (Weeks 5-8 six teams have byes, Week 9 four teams have byes, Week 10 ZERO teams have byes, & Week 11 four teams have byes)
That actually would have made alot of sense if the teams off week 11 were team that would be playing on thanksgiving thursday.
My gut feeling is that they needed to switch weeks 10 and 11 in the schedule because of some unforseen scheduling conflict so they realized the easiest solution was to flip weeks iunstead of trying to reschedule everything.
This is awesome! When can we expect one for 2011?
League sure did right by Dallas fans… six national games and four double-header entries… three of which are certain to be national….
Let’s Go!
Can I post
