@Gilbert…..there are locations in the country that legally get CBS or FOX stations from two different markets …under the cable act they CAN NOT block out network tranmissions.
That was certainly not the case when I lived outside of Fredericksburg where I received Richmond and DC stations so meither was shown.
Part of the rule neighboring markets …even if the are not classified as secondary markets still cant broadcast a blacked out game.
In the surrounding Maryland counties of DC the cable company picks up both baltimore and DC tv stations…neither is blocked.
@DAve
The FOX early is NOT BLACKED OUT in Denver…the denver FOX station knows it is utterly pointless to air a game aginst a Bronco if it has a choice. This week there is only one FOX game…one going at the same time as the Broncos and one at the later time…..For money from advertizers they really need to carry the late game because nobody will watch the other game.
The station would make more money runnin paid advertizement against the Broncos than they would carrying a game.
The only time they would air a game is when they have to…which is when Denver is on the road and FOX has a doubleheader.
West Palm and Gainesville are not tied to carrying the Bucs games…..Gaineville is more closely associated with Jacksonville and West Palm Beach is with Miami so those are the teams that they will air over the Bucs.
DJP
I’d imagine if the Atlanta-Philly game is the #1 game on Fox they’ll have Thom Brennanman filling in for Joe Buck with Troy Aikman.
similar scenario with the giants-eagles game at 1 and the Yankees-Phillies world series game last year. If not for the brett favre vikings-packers game where Brennanman filled in for Buck with Aikman, then maybe Buck would have called a football-baseball doubleheader.
[...] you will still get the game. If you live in UP Michigan, you will get the game as well. Check the map for full details and updates. At this point we can just call Ron Pitts and John Lynch the official Rams announcing [...]
@AL…
If The Yankees are in the world series…AL has the middle 3 games…which are on sat, Sun, and Mon….
Then Buck will likely work the Packers @ Jets at 1pm for FOX then travel over to Yankee stadium.
Any other AL team it would be impossible.
interesting scenario…..
On October 24 you could have cincinati playing atlanta in 2 sports. baseball in cincy, football in atlanta.
They could keep buck on NFL and use a second play by play man for the Sunday game.
To use an old analogy on this site, looks like someone took crayons and colored the map.
Interesting indeed.
@ Matthew Hewes I totally agree with you. The game they are showing has not reason to be played in Gainesville. And WOGX is a semi-satellite station of WOFL, in Orlando. WOGX always shows the what WOFL does unless there is a blackout, like 2 weeks ago when WOGX got the bucs while WOFL did not.
@ Chris I don’t know why they do that. I have family in the Palm Beach market and it seems like they never get a Bucs game. But the Dolphins are not playing at 1pm on Fox so why they show a pointless out of state game is beyond me.
@ DJP
The Bengals play in Atlanta on the 24th, which means that when an AFC team plays at an NFC team, as is the case here, then CBS has the game.
If this game was in Cincy, then FOX would air the game.
So I live in Wisconsin, will I be able to see the Colts play the early game on CBS even though Fox will be showing the Green Bay game? Isn’t there some blackout thingy required?
FOX45 Daytons website is showing that they will telivise the ATL/CLE game at 1pm. I’m guess the Benglas didnt sell out. They annouced on the radio this morning that they were giving away 2 tickets to the Begals game Sunday.
@AL @DJP
The Dallas/Minnesota game is the primary game of week 6 and Joe Buck is going nowhere outside of the baseball playoffs for 3 weeks. Aikman will be working with a different partner for 3 weeks it’s been that way since 2002 and that will not change.
@Abel
I was just talking of the possibility of Buck doing both games.
I think its possible next weekend because FOX airs the NLCS which means the first 2 games are in Philadelphia so its possible game 2 is on Sunday night in Philadelphia …so he could do the philly game next Sunday and then cross the street and do the Phillies game.
If the schedule has the NL series off on Sunday where he does say game 2 on Satursday night in Philly he couls still do that football game and then go and do game 3 on Monday.
Interesting to see what happens.
Has it ever happened….football announcer goes and does baseball game in the same day?
@Matt….I know whose game is in what network…..
I amend the quoted statement… looks like someone ate a box of crayons and vomited on the map.
@Mike Yes, you’ll be able to see it. No blackout on the other network because the Packer game is on the road. Would also depend on where in Wisconsin you are, if it were a home game.
@DJP
To kind of answer your question. Kenny Albert announced the Minnesota-Pittsburgh NFL game and was a reporter in the Yankees Lockeroom after they won the world series that night.
@ Abel
That is very true about the Buck skipping those 3 weeks for baseball. going back to my previous statement last year was the only time I can think of where it could have been possible for an announcer to call a world series and NFL game in teh same day.
had it not been for media obessed about brett favre the Eagles-Giants game would have been the marquee matchup that weekend instead of the Packers-Vikings.
@Nicholas Mooneyhan
The crayon and vomit analogy is a good one, especially in the eastern half of the country.
You really have to wonder what Fox and the NFL are thinking. They must be drinking when they decide who gets what. Why are the isolated pockets of Montana, Nebraska, Wyoming getting the Saints-Cardinals game? For consistency, they should be getting the red shaded game.
The same thing goes for SE Colorado, NE Kansas, parts of Arkansas, western Tennessee and the Bowling Green area getting the Packers-Redskins game? Any of the other games bordering those areas would be far better.
Funny how the middle of Iowa is getting the Bears game, east of that, the Packers are shown and then the remaining part of eastern Iowa gets the Bears. Wacky coloring Fox and wrong!
The Packers–Redskins game is getting too much distribution. The western states should be getting the Saints-Cardinals or the Rams-Lions.
One more thing here, parts of Florida getting the Giants-Texans game? Miami area getting that game, huh? Earth to Fox, the Bucs are playing.
@Justin, bang on as it makes no sense.
Toledo is getting Rams/Lions since its part of Lions home market.
I guess now that the Chiefs are winning, the Wichita FOX affiliate does not want to program a game against KC unless the Cowboys are playing at the same time. Now why would the Fox affiliate in Topeka be showing a game against the Chiefs, even though it is a secondary KC market? Seems silly. The FOX affiliate in Topeka must be intentionally trying to draw the audience away from the Chiefs game on WIBW.
There’s a good selection of games this week. The one that I know will be the funnest out of the bunch will the Rams-Lions game. That game spells fun all over it. Too bad Stafford is out b/c that’s a potential playoff matchup down the line.
I really want to see NYG @ HOU that game will be good right there with Brian Cushing back for the up and coming Texans.
Thank god I won’t have to watch the bad play-by-play man Joe Buck. Aikman is good but Joe weighs him. That is a good game between the Pack and Skins but I’m glad I don’t have to listen to Buck.
What is that tiny speck in Kentucky getting the Packers/Redskins game?
[...] are the TV maps for week 5 NFL action: FOX CBS at noon CBS at [...]
@Naqdop
The reason for thos small pockets in nebraska, Wyoming, and Montana….
For nebraska…its because there are no tv stations locally so cable/satlitte brings in the Denver tv stations. There is a sliver in west nebraska that is a different color because they get cheyenne stations.
The wyoming silver is an error…they get BVillings, MT and Casper, WY stations
The same is true for that part of Montana…they would get stations from Great Fallas or Billings…not Denver unless the satelitte company pulls in denver.
Those specks on the map
Des Moines is split with covering GB, Minn, or chicago…so they opted for the Chicago game for balance and if Carolina has some players who are from their market or played for Iowa or iowa State.
That speck in Kentucky (bowling Green) goes with that game because its the number 1 game of the week and their may be some local connection…to the south its Nashville so they cover division rival houston…to the north you have cincinati.
Topeka KS…they opted for the green bay game maybe because Jordy Nelson played for Kansas state (their coverage area),,,they alkso couldve opted to take the TB-Cincy game because of the tampa bay QB.
West plam beach and gainesville picking up the Giants game because you have a significant number oif residents who are NY/NJ retirees or people who have second homes. The teams also likely have a few players either from the area or played for Univ of florida and the univ of Miami.
Hey admin: Toledo is getting the Lions game, they’re in the Lions home market (NOT the Browns’).
Why in the world does Houston market not get a CBS early game at all ? Everybody in TX except the Houston area has KC vs IND on CBS.. This is ridiculous
@ parag
The Texans are at home on FOX vs the Giants in the early slot. CBS in Houston can’t show a 1:00 game.
@parag: It’s because of the blackout/doubleheader rule:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NFL_on_Television
“The NFL rules prohibit other NFL games from being shown on local television stations while a local team is playing a sold-out home game. The rules are designed to encourage ticket-holders show up at the stadium instead of watching the other game on television.”
@TOM
under NFL tv rules…the secondary markets are only required to carry the road games.
toledo is secondary to Detoit. So they are required to carry only the orad game of detroit…NOT the home games.
Since toledo is in Ohio they are opting to carry a fellow state game involing Cleveland. It may be the only time thay can carry Cleveland on the local Fox affiliate.
@parag
The NFL blackout rules and home team tv rules apply.
Houston plays home hosting the Giants..the game is on FOX.
The only way you can get 3 games when the hometeam plays at home..
1. game is a sell out
2. the network that airs that game is the doubleheader network for that week.
#2 fails this week…CBS is the doubleheader network but fox airs this game.
Thus when only 2 games…one is at 1pm and one is at 4pm…and one on each network.
Since its a sell out FOX airs the 1pm game and CBS airs the 4pm game.
Also…the home team gets exclusivity when airing the home game.
The only time the hometown team will get direct competition to the games is when the hometeam is on the road and the other network has the doubleheader weekend.
The only exceptions to this is during week 1 when CBS has only 1pm games…..
and when the other network opts to pick up a much saught after game….taking an early game in direct competition with the hometown team is crazy because it is a loss on viewership and ad revenue.
an example of this could be in week 7 where there is a crappy token game of arizona @ seattle.
Found out tonight Bengals sold out their home game. There for will be on TV in Dayton area.
according to TVGuide.com Fox Toledo is showing the Lions.
Thumbs down to the Lima and Columbus Fox affiliates for dumping the Bengals game in favor for the Browns. Who cares about the “Clowns” outside of Cleveland!
I’ll say it again. Southeast Florida and we are stuck with NY Giants and Houston. Maybe the rest of New Yorkers can move to Florida, and then all the Floridians can move to NY and we can watch good games again.
Last weeks NY Jets vs Buffalo was a real nail biter.
NFL blackout rules are old hat. I feel for the poor souls in down and out cities who would rather feed their families than pay wealthy NFL owners to sit at a game. Now they are punished by the NFL for their responsible decision by being blacked out. F you Goodell.
Can anyone tell me why I live in Ohio and can;t see the cleveland browns play! I am in steelers country and have to watch Poopsburg games EVERY sunday! Thats bad enough, but when they aren’t on, then I have to watch the Baltimore Ray Lewis’s! This is an OUTRAGE! This is Browns and Steelers territory! Not Baltimore/Cincinati! For the love of god will sombody at CBS or Fox Realize this!!!!!!!!!!!!
As a Giants fan in Gainesville, I’m glad they’re showing the Giants here! They’d better not switch it at the last minute or I’ll be SOL because getting into any place that shows all the games after 1:00 is impossible. I can tell you there are plenty of Giants fans around here, lots of transplanted NYers. Maybe that’s why they’re showing the Giants here.
wanted to watch the Bengals in Columbus!,,….what a bummer!The Browns beat us last week, but they are a BAD TEAM…the Browns Atl game will stink for sure!
This site is very helpful to me. Because I have an antenna system good enough to receive another NFL market (Green Bay), I always gain at least one game (except 2 weeks ago when they played my Bears on Monday night).
So this week I get 3 games at 12 (Chi-Car, GB-Wash, KC-Ind) and 1 at 3 (Ten-Dal).
Hate it when they won’t air any game. Non blackout related because your team is playing at another time. They air paid programming or a stupid movie.
the redskins packers game is getting too much distribution. but here in northern maryland you have to watch the ravens. even though they are on different stations.
how come in toledo we are seeing cleveland instead of detroit on fox
FYI – The Packers v Redskins game is blacked out in the SF Bay Area. I don’t think we are getting any games today until the Sunday night game.
bay area only blacked out in standard def. sometimes we’ll lose national games if Raiders non-sellout occurs at same time but that isn’t happening here. gotta think somebody screwed up at local fox station, as there is no possible reason for any blackout, much less a standard-def only one…
@Shah
As I mentioned before the Columbus FOX affiliate is split between Bengals and Browns. They are looking at the opponent so they opted to take the Falcons game…then later this season they will take the saints @ Bengals.
@Jeff Pollock….not sure where you live but Youngstown is a split market between cleveland and Pittsburgh.
This week the two ohio teams are on FOX , Pittsburgh is idle so the logic is to air the division rival team the ravens.
@The Dude
The only time hometown network is forced to carry a game in competition to home team is when home team is on the road and other network has doubleheader.
If the hometeam is at home and its a sell out they have exclusivity.
If networks have the option they will air a game not in competition with the home team because that station will make no money in ad revenue because nobody will watch the game.
@ DJP
Thank you for the explanations about why certain games are aired in far away geographic regions. Some of them make sense while others do not. The retirees and vacationers of NY in Florida is okay and so is showing a divison rival. Favourite college players is not a good excuse.
I know I mentioned this earlier but it is worth repeating. Speaking of division rivals, FOX was stupid to show the Packers-Redskins game to NFC West cities and states and some bordering states. The Rams are division rivals and should have been shown to these areas or the Saints-Cardinals (except for the Bay area because of the Raiders game).
@Naqdop
I agree…when local networks pick games the tend to go with the early 1pm non-doubleheader network game
with exceptions:
1. local area team on tv (home team or regional team)
2. If the 4 pm has more local interest because:
a. divisional temas playing
b. a really good game
c. some local interest to the game either a significant player is from there or played college there.
Yes significant hometown college teams graduated player who are now playing prominent positions are shown in the local area some examples of this:
1. Sam Bradford’s Rams games in Okla city and Tulsa
2. Suh’s game with detroit by Lincoln, NE
3. Philip Rivers San diego game by raleigh (played for NC State)
4. Aaron Rodgers Packers game by Chico/Redding because he is from Chico and played for Cal.
Favorite/star college players from the school is a good excuse.
for example look for Topeka on one of these weeks picking up a Tampa Bay game directly against a Chiefs game because of freeman at QB.
